The internet gives us many opportunities to connect, learn, shop, manage finances, and become more independent. Unfortunately, it also gives scammers new ways to reach us.
Anyone can become a target of fraud or an online scam. Learning to recognize the warning signs is one of the best ways to protect ourselves and the people we support.
For people with intellectual, developmental, cognitive, or other disabilities, education and support can be especially helpful in staying safe online. Family members, caregivers, and support professionals can also play an important role by learning about common scams and talking about online safety with the people they support.
We encourage everyone to take the Online Frauds and Scams course. This free course includes four short lessons and takes approximately 35–40 minutes to complete. It can help participants recognize suspicious activity, protect personal information, and know when to stop and ask for help.
A little time spent learning about scams today could help prevent a costly mistake tomorrow.
